East Sweden business region
The East Swedish region is located in the south-east of Sweden, covering the counties of Östergötland, Södermanland and Gotland. It is strategically placed at the centre of the Baltic Sea region and has a thriving industrial life.
Östergötland – Dynamic Twin Cities
Half a million people live in Östergötland – the Twin Cities region. The twin cities referred to are Linköping and Norrköping. They have 260,000 inhabitants together and are home to successful companies and one of Europe’s foremost universities. The region is ranked as the third best logistics centre in Sweden, with one of the Baltic’s largest and most modern ports and three airports with international connections.
Östergötland has a high level of research and development. The manufacturing industry is important and ranges from traditional engineering companies to high-technological development and production. Some of the biggest companies are Saab, Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, BT Products, Ericsson, Dometic and Holmen Paper. The public sector is also significant, with Linköping University, a university hospital and about ten state bodies.
The Twin Cities of Sweden have world-leading knowledge and competence in several areas, e.g. aviation engineering, electronics, software and life science technologies.
Södermanland – Part of the Successful Mälar Region
The Stockholm-Mälar Region, where Södermanland is one of five counties, is Sweden’s central hub, home to approximately three million people, of which 270,000 live in Södermanland. The location in the vicinity of Stockholm has drawn communication investments and the international Stockholm-Skavsta Airport has grown to be one of the biggest airports in Sweden. The largest municipalities are Eskilstuna and Nyköping, with 90,000 and 50,000 inhabitants respectively.
Iron, steel, metal and engineering industries are important in Södermanland. SSAB and Volvo Construction Equipment are two of the biggest employers in the private sector.
Gotland – at the Heart of the Baltic Sea
Gotland, an island located in the middle of the Baltic, is the part of Sweden which has the greatest density of companies. Agriculture and food industry account for a large part of this, with increasing ecological farming. The visitor industry is also of vital importance. Big private employers in Gotland are Faktab Finans and Cementa.
About 60,000 people live in Gotland. Visby is the biggest town with 23,000 inhabitants. The island can be reached quickly by boat and plane.
